Hair transplant for women: when is it really indicated?
Hair transplants are not just for men. In women, hair loss takes specific forms and calls for a rigorous assessment before a transplant is considered. Dr Khalil El Cadhi, full member of the ISHRS, explains when a transplant is relevant — and when other avenues should be explored first.
A different kind of hair loss
In women, alopecia is often diffuse (overall thinning) rather than localised. It can be linked to hormonal factors, a deficiency, stress, certain conditions, or traction alopecia caused by overly tight hairstyles (repeated high ponytails, braids). Identifying the cause is essential: not all hair loss calls for a transplant.
When is a transplant indicated?
A transplant makes sense when there is a stable donor area and specific zones to densify: temple recession, a widening part, localised traction alopecia, or correction after surgery. Conversely, evolving diffuse loss is often treated medically first. A consultation with scalp analysis (ScanScalp.ai) allows an honest decision. Learn more about women’s hair restoration.
The procedure and discretion
The procedure follows the same principles as in men (FUE, DHI or Long Hair FUE), with particular attention to a fine hairline and a natural look. Long Hair FUE, with no shaving, is often appreciated by patients for its discretion: the length of the hair is preserved. Discover Long Hair FUE.
Realistic expectations
Regrowth is judged over several months, and the result depends on the individual profile: donor-area quality, type of alopecia, hormonal balance. The goal is a harmonious densification, not an instant transformation. A serious surgeon sets this framework from the first consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to shave my head?
Not necessarily: Long Hair FUE allows a transplant without shaving, particularly suited to long hair.
Is a transplant suitable for diffuse loss?
Often not as a first step: evolving diffuse loss is treated medically first. The assessment determines this.
Can traction alopecia be corrected?
If the area is localised and stabilised, a transplant can be considered, after stopping the responsible hairstyles.
