Beard transplant: densify and redraw, without overdoing it
A beard transplant can densify a patchy beard, fill in gaps or redraw an irregular line. Long reserved for the scalp, follicular grafting now applies to the face with excellent results when well planned. Dr Khalil El Cadhi, full member of the ISHRS, takes stock.
Who is a beard transplant for?
It concerns men whose facial hair is naturally sparse, irregular, or marked by areas with no regrowth (scars, old lesions). It also suits those wishing to reinforce a beard line, sideburns or a moustache. A good-quality scalp as a donor area is generally required.
How the procedure works
The principle is identical to a hair transplant: follicular units are harvested (often from the back of the head) then implanted one by one into the beard, scrupulously respecting the angle, direction and natural density of the hair. This precision of orientation is essential for a credible result — it is the whole point of the procedure. FUE, DHI or Long Hair FUE may be used depending on the case. The result: what to expect
As with the scalp, the implanted hairs go through temporary shedding in the first weeks, before gradual regrowth. The look becomes clear over several months. Once established, the grafted hairs are trimmed and shaved like a natural beard. Results depend on the individual profile; no promise of density is made.
Why planning makes the difference
A successful beard is not just a matter of graft count: the line design, harmony with the face and the orientation of each hair determine how natural the result looks. That is why the project is built in consultation, after analysis — not off a catalogue.
Frequently asked questions
Where do the grafts come from?
Most often from the scalp donor area (back of the head), of proven quality and durability.
Is a transplanted beard permanent?
Hairs from the donor area keep their characteristics. Evolution still depends on each patient’s individual profile.
Can I shave afterwards?
Yes, once healing and regrowth are established, the beard is trimmed and shaved normally.
