Hair transplant: the step-by-step timeline and recovery
What happens before, during and after a hair transplant? Understanding the timeline and recovery helps you approach the procedure calmly and know what is normal at each stage. Dr Khalil El Cadhi, full member of the ISHRS, details the typical journey — bearing in mind that every profile evolves at its own pace.
Before the procedure
It all starts with a consultation (in person or by video): scalp analysis, donor-area assessment, hairline design and graft-count estimate using ScanScalp.ai. A written quote is provided. Simple instructions are given (avoiding alcohol and tobacco, certain medications) to prepare the procedure as well as possible.
The day itself
The procedure takes place under local anaesthetic, over a single day. It includes harvesting the grafts, preserving them (governed here by the ForceHT protocol), creating the recipient sites and implantation. The duration depends on the number of grafts. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable and well organised the day is.
The first days (D1 to D10)
A first check-up takes place the very next day. Small crusts form around the grafts and mild forehead swelling is common in the first days: these are normal reactions. Following the instructions (gentle washing, sleeping position, avoiding rubbing and intense sport) is decisive during this phase. The crusts usually fall off within about ten days.
The following weeks: temporary shedding
Between the 3rd and 6th week, some of the implanted hairs fall out: this is temporary shedding (shock loss), an expected and harmless phenomenon. The follicle stays in place and enters a resting phase before producing a new hair. This step sometimes unsettles patients who are not expecting it — hence the importance of follow-up that explains and reassures.
Regrowth (3 to 12 months)
Regrowth sets in gradually from the 3rd-4th month. Density builds month after month, and the look usually becomes clear between the 9th and 12th month. The result is therefore judged over time, not in the first weeks.
Recovering well: the right habits
- Follow the washing and scalp-protection instructions carefully.
- Protect the head from the sun for the first weeks.
- Resume sport gradually, following the surgeon’s guidance.
- Stay in touch with the team: remote follow-up, in French or English, supports the whole regrowth period.
Frequently asked questions
When can I go back to work?
Many patients return to office work within a few days. It depends on the profile and type of activity; instructions are personalised.
Is temporary shedding worrying?
No, it is a normal step in the process. The follicles then resume regrowth.
When will I see the final result?
Most of the density builds between the 6th and 12th month, with variations depending on the individual profile.
Dr El Cadhi provides remote post-operative follow-up, in French or Arabic, throughout regrowth. Plan your visit to Djerba · Repair a previous transplant
